Now available to athenahealth’s growing network of healthcare providers, the newly integrated solution helps patients avoid delays and confusion in receiving medication from the pharmacy, as patients can own their prescriptions and have visibility into their status.

It also allows clinical teams to eliminate unnecessary pharmacy calls and administrative support needed for pharmacy transfers and other preventable prescription issues. The athenahealth Marketplace empowers athenahealth customers to easily discover and implement solutions that meet their unique needs, fostering a more efficient and patient-centered approach to care. 

In light of significant retail pharmacy closures and medication shortages in recent years, patients have faced growing challenges in filling their prescriptions quickly and smoothly. With over 15% of prescriptions requiring a second touch by clinical teams due to prescription issues, clinicians and patient support teams spend significant time on pharmacy calls, searching for pharmacies, reentering data, re-sending prescriptions, and more, resulting in higher administrative burdens and a frustrating patient experience.

Photon’s technology alleviates these burdens, saving hours each week per prescriber on phone calls and resolving up to 71% of patient requests for prescription support. Photon’s integration offers such value without disrupting any workflow for providers using athenahealth:

• First, a provider sends a prescription within athenaClinicals as they normally would. 
• Photon then enables an automatic text (SMS) with a secure link to be sent to the patient. At the link, patients can view details of the prescription and pharmacy it was sent to.
• Photon then verifies whether the pharmacy has in-stock medication and sends status updates over text, ensuring the patient stays informed and visits the pharmacy only if a ready-by time is confirmed.
• If medication is out-of-stock, or the patient wants to change pharmacies for another reason, the patient can re-route their prescription to a new pharmacy using the secure link. They can also rely on 24/7 text support from Photon’s team.
• Thus, Photon lifts the burden of pharmacy transfers: patients don’t need to contact their providers, and providers don’t have to call pharmacies.
